报告摘要

This paper investigated the high-risk work environment of scaffolders in the Hong Kong construction sector. We interviewed a sample of Hong Kong scaffolders to understand what it entails to become a skilled craftsman in an occupation that is perceived as dangerous and ‘low status’, and now faces threats to its occupational legitimacy. We found that the sector attracts young men from disadvantaged backgrounds. The men enact unsafe high-risk activities and brinkmanship that bolsters the identity of intrepid performers in a work context defined by machismo and claims of fearlessness. We highlight the implications for other ‘peripheral’ forms of knowledge, and demonstrate how a collective responsibility for safety is sustained and challenged within this community of practitioners.
