讲座主题：The rise of fintech and the future of (UK) banking: What do we know? What will happen next?
讲座简介：
This lecture will delve into a pivotal juncture in the history of Western banking, where large retail banks face a growing challenge from the rise of financial technology (fintech). Traditionally protected by a large branch network and reputation, large retail banks now confront a diminishing advantage as people switch to online banking and their branch network no longer confers a unique advantage. Beginning with an exploration of the role of traditional banking, this lecture employs empirical data to analyse the burgeoning influence of fintech across key banking markets. In addition, it will examine the transformative potential of neo-banking within the UK and Europe. The analysis extends to the peer-to-peer (P2P) market and then utilizes Baumol's theory of contestable markets to predict the evolving landscape of retail banking over the forthcoming decade. This investigation contributes to the understanding of the dynamic interplay between traditional banking and emerging fintech, offering insights into the potential trajectory of retail banking in the face of fintech proliferation.
